CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Are you home? Mindy read the text, shifted a look at her father who was driving them to church, and decided she had to answer the text.

Headed to church with Dad. And though it was always tradition, it pained her now to add, I’ll be staying at their house tonight.

A few moments later Vic texted back. I’ll redirect Santa your way. Merry Christmas. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Mindy grinned down at her phone, sending only a heart emoji before turning her phone over in her lap.

“Was that your mother?” her father asked.

“No.” Mindy said she looked out the window, into the darkness of the city as they passed through it.

“Your mom says you’re seeing someone,” he said, and Mindy couldn’t help but laugh, drawing her father’s attention away from the road for a brief moment.

“When did she tell you that? I didn’t tell her anything.”

Her father’s lips pursed. “Carrie told her you’re seeing the neighbor boy.”

Mindy’s smile widened. Neighbor boy.

Her father shifted a look in her direction again. “Well?”

“Fine. Yes, I’m seeing Vic Hayes. He lives in his grandmother’s house.”

She watched as her father’s face contorted with what she assumed was concern. “Victoria Hanson’s grandson?”

“Yes.”

His face crinkled up. “Liv’s kid?”

“You know Liv?”

His fingers tightened around the steering wheel. “Yeah. I only lived three blocks away. We all knew each other back then. I knew the Smith boys and the Cartwrights. Most of the time, everyone would find themselves in the cul-de-sac because it was a good place to run.”

Mindy smiled, thinking about what it must have been like when her mother lived there. She hadn’t even considered that her mother and Vic’s mother would have grown up together.

“Mr. Smith is the neighborhood watch, I guess you could say,” Mindy laughed. “He’s always at the window watching what’s going on.”

Her dad nodded. “His wife was always that way, even when we were all younger. You knew that if you did something wrong, Mrs. Smith would be calling your parents.”

“Really?”

“Oh, yeah. What did they have, eight kids? They had some my age, and some your age,” he recollected.

“I only knew Curtis and Brian.”

Her father nodded. “That’s right. Once the older kids started moving out, she got pregnant again. Into her forties. And, they knew having a kid that much younger than their siblings would be hard, so they had two so they were together.”

Mindy let out a hum. “I guess that makes sense.”

“It does, except then your parents are the same age as everyone else’s grandparents. Mr. Smith has to be in his eighties now.”

Mindy nodded. “I haven’t actually seen him outside of his house much in the past three years that I’ve lived there.”

“I think his kids keep an eye on him. Especially since Mrs. Smith died.”

“I see cars come and go from his house a lot.” She considered the Smith family more. “Curt and Brian were ornery.”

Her father laughed. “The entire Smith clan was ornery.”

They shared a laugh over that.

“So, Mom and Liv, were they good friends?”

Her father shifted in his seat.
